Transhumance in Bulgaria
Last summer, in August 2024, I was fortunate enough to spend a day walking with a flock of sheep in the Balkan Mountains of Bulgaria.
The NGO FWFF (Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna) is an organization dedicated to biodiversity and is particularly known for reintroducing vultures in the Kresna Gorge and in Kotel, Bulgaria. In line with this reintroduction, the organization also works to restore ecological processes in the country.
The flock consists of approximately 1,000 animals and is used for nature conservation purposes. Around the NGO's farm, the mountain pastures are grazed by various livestock such as cattle, horses, and sheep. In the past, livestock was moved regularly to ensure sufficient access to grazing land. These seasonal movements took place over several days and were known as transhumance — the cyclical migration of livestock between winter and summer pastures.
Transhumance is an ancient tradition that played a crucial role in shaping both landscapes and ecosystems. It was a common practice in southern Europe, including Italy, Spain, and the Balkan Peninsula. Since 2019, UNESCO has recognized transhumance as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Vultures, wolves, and other scavengers benefited from transhumance, as a few weakened animals typically died along the way. Grazing also created a mosaic landscape that supported biodiversity.
The NGO is working to revive this age-old tradition, and hopefully, this marks the beginning of a renewed and meaningful custom.
